Governors’ information and duties

The School’s Governing Board is made up of a range of different types of school governor from the school and wider community. Their core functions include, but are not limited to, ensuring that the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined; that the Headteacher performs their responsibilities for the educational performance of the school and the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources.

There are different categories of governor, and these are set out below.

1. Parent governors are elected by other parents at the school and include a person with parental responsibility, or carer, of a registered pupil at the school.

2. Staff governors are teaching and support staff who are employed by either the governing board or the local authority to work at the school under a contract of employment. They are elected by the staff at the school.

3. The Headteacher is a member of the governing body by virtue of their office.

4. Local authority governors are nominated by the local authority but appointed by the governing board.

5. Partnership governors are appointed by the governing body and are required in foundation schools that do not have a foundation.

6. Co-opted governors are appointed by the governing body due to the skills they possess which will contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.
