Poland

(SOCRATES PROJECT)

The initial  meeting took place from the 1st to the 7th October 2005 at Primary School No. 25 in Rzeszow Poland. The aim of the visit was to get to know each other, decide on methods of working together and plan the first year’s activities.

At the same time the delegation became acquainted with the school where they were introduced to the Polish Education System, methods of teaching and learning and the realities of working in a Polish school.

Following much discussion the working group, which included some of the Polish teachers, decided on certain methods and strategies that they could use in intercultural education. ways in which information can be passed on, especially concentrating on visual and multimedial resources

Members from the different countries described how they go about teaching their pupils about Europe and topics were alighted on which could be used to put accross intercultural education e.g. projects, interactive methods,, group work and presentations.. The WebQuest was introduced and discussed as an excellent method for introducing ICT into the projects. Some of the schools agreed to dedicate a room to European exhibitions.

Particular attention was paid to making the teaching accessible to pupils with Special Educational Needs as well as those at risk of social exclusion.

It was decided that it would be a good idea to approach : local authorities, cultural associations, local tourist offices and town promotion offices for help and cooperation.

Interspersed between the discussions there was a chance for thevisitors to be introduced to some of the World heritage Sites of Poland, which allowed them to collect invaluable teaching materials and plan draft lessons. Hopefully the visit portrayed Poland in a positive light both culturally and as a worthy partner for the development of innovative teaching methods.,
