QUALIFICATION GCSE Mathematics

CONTENT Mathematics in Years 10 and 11 builds upon the work done at Key Stage 3. The course covers a wide range of topics, providing all with a firm foundation in mathematical techniques. New mathematical concepts are taught as well as reinforcement of the basic ones. Pupils are also instructed in the appropriate use of ICT, including the effective use of calculators.

BENEFITS Pupils are given the opportunities to:

· use and apply mathematics in practical tasks, in real life problems and within mathematics itself

· use calculators and computer software, eg spreadsheets

· explore a variety of situations that lead to the expression of mathematical relationships

· Use a variety of different representations

· engage in practical and experimental work, in order to appreciate some of the principles that govern random events

· carry out calculations mentally.

CAREERS Mathematics is a prerequisite to any chosen career. It is particularly important in certain fields, eg Accountancy, Medicine, Law, Teaching and all Science related careers.
